Tang Ching-Ping Held Public Lecture

Prof. Tang Ching-Ping from the Department of Political Science at National Chengchi University, Taipei, currently honouring the ERCCT with his visit over the Chinese new year holidays, gave a public lecture on Tuesday, February 1st. Under the headline "Modernization and Conservation by Aboriginal Communities" Prof. Tang presented the two cases of the Tao 達悟族 (Yami 雅美族) on Lanyu Island (蘭嶼) and the Smangus Tribe (司馬庫斯部落) of the Atayal (泰雅族), and how their traditional social institutions, which constituted effective mechanisms for conservation of natural ressources, got influenced, changed, even destroyed in the course of modernization. The ensuing discussion focused on the fruitful relationship between the disciplines of anthropology and political science with regard to Taiwan Studies.
