Dr. Shih Fang-Long gave public lecture at the ERCCT

Posted on May, 03 2011

Dr. Shih Fang-Long, Co-Director of the Taiwan Research Programme at the London School of Economics and Political Science, on May 2nd gave a public lecture entitled "Area Studies and Comparative Perspective: Theorizing Connectivity". In her well-attended lecture she first criticised an essentialist notion of Taiwan and Taiwanese-ness, as constructed by functionalist informed anthropology. She then went on to argue that much more can be gained in terms of thinking about Taiwan, if one looks at it from the (post-modern) perspective of connectivity and compares Taiwan to other places or areas shaped by complex connections with powerful neighbours during their history, like e.g. Ireland.
