Assessing the Presidency of Ma Ying-jiu in Taiwan

The years of the Ma Ying-jiu presidency in Taiwan were controversial from the beginning. When he came to power in 2008, Ma was considered the strongest and most popular KMT presidential candidate since Lee Teng-hui. However, his rapprochement towards China met with increasing resistance and by the time he stepped down in 2016, he enjoyed the lowest support rates of any incumbent president. What happened in between?

Beatrice Zani, who visits the ERCCT under the Short-Term Resident Fellow Programme from April to August 2018, will present her research project "Trans-local, Trans-versal, Trans-gressive: Women's Circulations between China and Taiwan" to ERCCT Fellows in the Taiwan Colloquium on Thursday, May 17, at 6 p.m. at Keplerstraße 2, 72074 Tübingen.

Deng Xiaodong, visiting the ERCCT as a guest doctoral fellow, has presented his research to ERCCT Fellows in the Taiwan Colloquium on Monday, May 14, 2018. His doctoral research project focuses on the formation of attitudes towards China among Taiwan's younger generations and thus easily sparked a lively discussion among ERCCT Fellows.

On April 20th, Prof. Schubert gave a lecture at the Graduate Institute of East Asian Studies (GEAS) at National Chengchi University in Taipei. The GEAS is an ERCCT partner since 2008, hence cooperating the center for ten years now. At the occasion, Prof. Schubert did also report on recent developments at the ERCCT and encouraged GEAS students to apply for the center's grant programmes.
